| Daytona
claims to be the "World's Most Famous Beach". We're
not sure about that, or a number of other claims made by various
visitor bureaus around the country, but Daytona would have to be
on anyone's short list of very popular beaches.
The area's main claim to fame is
and always has been the remarkable width and soft sand of the
beach. The beach provided one of the best surfaces on the East
Coast for high speed driving, and was used accordingly. From
land speed records of the early automobile days to stock car
racing after WWII, Daytona has long been associated with fast
driving.
Although the race cars have moved
to the Daytona International Speedway, driving is still a part
of the Daytona Beach experience. It is one of only a few popular
beaches that allows cars on the sand. There have been some
restrictions enacted in recent years, but cars on the beach are
still an undeniable part of the appeal.
Off the beach, Daytona is working
to install the attractions that are beginning to typify other
beach resorts. In the meantime, there's Kennedy Space Center to
the south, Orlando to the west, St. Augustine to the north, and
the great beaches and speedway in Daytona to keep visitors
occupied. |
